The principal industry of Paraguay is farming. In 2001 the yields of leading agricultural products, in metric tons, were cassava (3.5 million), seed cotton (208,000), sugarcane (2.9 million), corn (0.9 million), wheat (250,000), root crops such as sweet potatoes (3.6 million), and fruits such as bananas and oranges (532,700). Livestock breeding is a major agricultural occupation; Paraguay has 9.9 million cattle, 400,000 horses, 2.7 million pigs, and 412,500 sheep.
