Turkish population, Shias, Sunnis, fifths, Islam

Islam ceased to be the official state religion of Turkey in 1928. Nevertheless, 97 percent of the population is Muslim—about four-fifths of whom are Sunnis, and the remainder mostly Shias found in the southeast. About 2 percent of the Turkish population claims no religion.
