Turkey’s population is 67,308,928 (2002 estimate). The average population density is 86 persons per sq km (224 per sq mi). Some 75 percent of the people lived in urban areas in 2000, compared with about 21 percent in 1950. The highest population concentrations were in Istanbul and in coastal regions.
