In 2001 Turkey’s armed forces included 515,100 people. In the mid-1990s between 25,000 and 30,000 troops were deployed in the Turkish-controlled section of Cyprus. All male citizens between the ages of 20 and 32 are required to serve from 1 to 16 months in the armed forces.
