Conventional thermal plants primarily fueled by coal or refined petroleum generated 58 percent of Spain’s electricity in 1999. Hydroelectric facilities produced 12 percent, and nuclear installations, 28 percent. Total output of electricity was 198 billion kilowatt-hours.
