Economy, Forestry and FishingExpansion of agricultural areas, a high rate of exploitation, and inadequate reforestation diminished Hungary’s forest resources through the period following World War II. In the 1960s the government restricted cutting and began an extensive reforestation program. The timber cut in 2000 was 5.90 million cu m (208 million cu ft). Important freshwater fisheries are located on Lake Balaton and the Danube and Tisza rivers. The commercial fish catch consists chiefly of common carp, pike, perch, sheatfish, and shad.
