In 1995, 21 percent of total government expenditures, and 10 percent of the GDP, went to defense. By 1996, following the end of the wars, military expenditures had dropped to 7 percent of the GDP. In 2001 the Croatian armed forces numbered 58,300 on active duty, including 50,700 in the army, 3,000 in the navy, and 4,600 in the air force. Reserve forces numbered 220,000. There were also 40,000 armed military police in Croatia. Ten months of military service is compulsory for 19-year-old men.
