The economy of the Dominican Republic was traditionally based on agriculture, and 20 percent of the workforce is still employed in farming or raising livestock. Today services employ 55 percent of the working population. The country also has an important mining sector. In 1999 the national budget included $2.8 billion in revenues and $2.9 billion in expenditures.
