Military service is compulsory for two years for all able-bodied men between the ages of 21 and 30. In 2001 the armed forces included an army of 190,000 members, a navy of 68,000, and an air force of 48,000. Beginning in the early 1990s, the proportion of GDP spent on the military was reduced substantially. In 2000 military expenditures totaled 2 percent of GDP.
