Democratic Liberal Party, New Politics, main political parties, GNP, ULD

Following April 2000 elections to the National Assembly, the main political parties in South Korea were the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) and the Grand National Party (GNP). The MDP (formerly called the National Congress for New Politics) won 115 seats and was able to form a ruling coalition with the United Liberal Democrats (ULD), which won 17 seats, with the support of pro-MDP independents. The GNP, formed by the 1997 merger of the New Korea Party (formerly called the Democratic Liberal Party) and the Democratic Party, won 133 seats and acted as the main opposition to the ruling coalition.
