The forestry industry is small; roundwood removals in 2000 were 1.7 million cubic meters (61 million cubic feet). Since the late 1960s South Korea has become one of the world’s leading fishing nations, with a modern fleet of more than 600 vessels engaged in distant water fisheries and many more fishing nearby and in coastal waters. The ports of Ulsan and Masan have been developed as deep-sea fishing bases with fish-processing plants. The catch in 1997 was 2.6 million metric tons; principal landings were mollusks, anchovies, mackerel, and hair tails.
