Malaysian armed forces, civilian government, air force, navy, Military service

In 2001 the Malaysian armed forces included 100,500 active-duty personnel, of which 80,000 were in the army, 8,000 were in the air force, and 12,500 were in the navy. Military service is voluntary. Unlike the military in neighboring Thailand and Indonesia, Malaysia’s military plays an apolitical role and is under the complete control of the civilian government.
