Indonesia is divided into 23 provinces, 2 special regions (Aceh and Yogyakarta), and the Jakarta special metropolitan district. The provinces are Bali, Bengkulu, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Jambi, Papua, Central Java, East Java, West Java, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Lampung, Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Riau, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Provinces are led by governors who are appointed by the president with the advice of the minister for home affairs and the provincial parliaments. Provinces are further divided into regencies (kabupaten) and cities (kotamadya), each having a mayor and locally elected legislature.
