Zimbabwe’s armed forces, consisting of an army and an air force, had 39,000 personnel in 2001. Military service is not compulsory. With the end in the mid-1990s of the Mozambican civil war—in which Zimbabwe’s armed forces played an active role—the government began to reduce the size of the armed forces. Zimbabwe also has a police force totaling about 20,000.
