subsistence farming, food shortages, Sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, metric tons

Some 75 percent of Zambia’s working population is engaged in agriculture, largely subsistence farming. Principal crops and the amount produced in metric tons in 2001 were corn, the staple grain (1.3 million); sugarcane (1.8 million); and cassava (1.0 million). Sunflower seeds, peanuts, sweet potatoes, and tobacco are also grown. Beef and dairy cattle are raised for domestic use. The agricultural sector remains underdeveloped and vulnerable to weather fluctuations, and food shortages have occurred.
