Primary education is compulsory in Tanzania, but not enough schools are available to accommodate all of the children, and only 65 percent of eligible children are enrolled. It is estimated that 92 percent of people over the age of 15 are literate. In 1998-1999 government and private schools were attended by 4 million elementary pupils and 234,700 secondary students. Institutions of higher education enrolled 18,867 students. Major schools include the University of Dar es Salaam (1961) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (1984), in Morogoro.
