The 2002 estimated population of Rwanda is 7,398,074. The population density is 281 persons per sq km (728 per sq mi), making Rwanda one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. The civil war that broke out in Rwanda in 1994 greatly disrupted the ethnic and geographic distribution of the population and caused massive numbers of deaths. However, the country’s density remains high.
