West African States, development banks, unit of currency, exchange rate, French franc

The unit of currency in Niger is the CFA franc (711.98 CFA francs equal U.S.$1; 2000 average). It is issued by the Central Bank of the West African States. Several commercial and development banks operate in the country. An exchange rate of 50 CFA francs to 1 French franc was in force from 1948 to 1994, when the CFA franc was devalued by 50 percent.
