Education is compulsory for five years in Madagascar. In 2001 the adult literacy rate had reached 80.8 percent, one of the highest rates in Africa. An estimated 93 percent of elementary school-aged children were enrolled in school in 1998, and 16 percent of those between the ages of 12 and 17 were enrolled in secondary school. The University of Antananarivo (1961) is the country’s principal institution of higher education.
