French is the official language of Benin, but most people speak an African language. About 65 percent of the population professes traditional religious beliefs. Islam is the religion of some 15 percent of the people, most of whom live in the north. Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism, is the religion of about 20 percent, the great majority of whom live in the south.
