Cotonou, literacy rate, institutions of higher learning, education free, primary school

The literacy rate increased to 59 percent in 2001 following the adoption of legislation in 1975 making education free and compulsory. Still, only 84 percent of eligible children are enrolled in primary school, and just 21 percent of those eligible were enrolled in secondary schools. About 16,300 students attend institutions of higher learning such as the National University of Benin (founded in 1970) in Cotonou.
