Economy, Currency and Banking

The basic unit of currency is the boliviano, equivalent to 1 million old Bolivian pesos (6.18 bolivianos equal U.S.$1; 2000 average). The Banco Central de Bolivia is the sole bank of issue. Several state-owned development banks provide investment credits to small mining and agricultural operations. Foreign and domestic private financial institutions also operate in the country.
