Population, Principal Cities

Buenos Aires is Argentina’s capital and largest city. In 1991 the population was 2,965,403; in 1996 the urbanized area surrounding and including the city held an estimated 11.9 million people. Other important cities include Cordoba (population, 1991, 1,157,507), a major manufacturing and university city; the river port of Rosario (1,157,372); La Plata (676,128), capital of Buenos Aires Province; Mar del Plata (512,880), a resort city at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata; San Miguel de Tucuman (470,809), a diversified manufacturing center; Salta (367,550), famous for its colonial architecture; and Mendoza (121,620), hub of an important agricultural and wine-growing region.
