Some 76 percent of the energy used in Afghanistan comes from firewood and other traditional fuels burned in the home. Most of the rest comes from gas, oil, and hydroelectricity. There are dams and hydroelectric stations on the Kondoz, Kabul, Arghandab, and Helmand rivers. The dams also store water for irrigation.
