Economy, AgricultureThe climate and soils of Mozambique are suitable for tropical agriculture. Farmers have cultivated sugar, cashews, and a wide range of oil-bearing seeds. In the highlands near the Malawi border, tea is an important crop. Mozambique’s staple crops are maize (1 million metric tons, 2001), sorghum (317,000 metric tons), and cassava (5.4 million metric tons). There is also limited production of traditional export crops such as sugar, copra, and cashews.
