Ethiopia has great potential for producing hydroelectricity. While in 1999 some 97 percent of the country’s relatively small yearly electricity output was generated by hydroelectric facilities, the amount produced year-to-year depends heavily upon regular rainfall. In 1999 annual production of electricity was 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours.
