Government, Health and WelfareThe government sponsors social welfare programs providing allowances for the aged, needy, and disabled; benefits for nonagrarian workers; agrarian reform; public works; and accelerated public-housing programs. Since 1974 medical care has been provided free to all Algerian citizens. In 1998 Algeria had 476 people per hospital bed and 1,271 people for every physician. Public health officials are engaged in an effort to eliminate epidemic diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis. Other health problems are widespread malnutrition and eye ailments such as trachoma. Cholera has been brought under control.
